C-SECTION AWARENESS MONTH
April is C-Section Awareness Month and so I wanted to share some top tips I've picked up from talking to hundreds of mums that have had C-sections in HK. After all, C-section rates are over 40% in Hong Kong and so chances are relatively high that these might come in use! You can still have birth preferences!
Depending on the circumstances around your birth it may still be possible to exercise your birth choices such as lowering the screen, your baby being born to a particular song, having photos taken, cord cutting, skin-to-skin, etc. If the situation allows, talk to your medical team before the procedure is started to discuss what will be possible.
Ask what is happening!
I've heard some mums saying that as they are being stitched up or in the recovery room, they aren't sure where their partner or baby is so make sure you ask what is happening and potentially request baby stays with you or your partner should you wish and the situation allows.
Ensure you listen to and ask for recovery advice
Things like how to get in and out of bed, wound care and tips for reducing scarring should all be covered, and if they aren't then ask! Make sure you book an appointment for a women's health physiotherapist at 6 weeks post birth - they may teach you about wound massage to improve comfort and reduce scarring. Take your pain relief as prescribed, remembered pain can affect milk production. Use pillows and support garments to improve comfort and take pressure off your wound, especially when breastfeeding and don't lift anything heavier than your baby! Keep hydrated to help milk flow and prevent constipation (which will put more pressure on your wound).
Be aware of C-section shakes
Reported to happen in more than 50% of women undergoing C-section, a normal body response to redistribute body temperature as a result of medications and low temperatures in the operating theatre but can be a little unsettling if you aren't aware!
